What is a calibration and how do I fill one in?

A calibration is often held before an evaluation or review and is a way of preparing for the review. During a calibration, managers set out how they intend to score their employees. They then talk it through with one another to discuss the reasoning behind their scores. This creates a shared sense of what the standards are, and it prevents one manager from scoring strictly while another scores leniently.

We support this process in Dialog. The calibration is filled in by the final reviewer of the evaluation that the calibration is linked to. Once you have filled in a calibration, you receive a visual report of it.

Does your organisation use calibrations? Then read below how this process works in Dialog.

Opening the calibration

As a manager, you fill in the calibration for your employees. There are three ways to open the calibration.

  1. From the announcement e-mail letting you know it's time to fill in the calibration. This e-mail contains a button that takes you straight to the calibration.

  2. From your 'Dashboard', where you can fill in the calibration after clicking the task.

  3. From 'Evaluations' and 'Open evaluations', where you click the action that still needs to be carried out. This can be 'Open calibration' if you still have to fill everything in, or 'Complete calibration' if you only have the last few employees left to score.

Filling in the calibration

You now see an overview of the employees for whom you can fill in the calibration. Here you can score the employees on the rating scale that will also be used during the evaluation. You can also write an explanation of why you gave a particular score.

Have you made a start and do you want to write the other calibrations later? Then save everything by clicking 'Save'. You can come back to this screen later.

When you have filled in the calibration, you click 'Save'. You then see a visual representation of the scores you gave.

Your employees and other managers cannot see what you have filled in.

You can then discuss the results of the calibration in a session with HR and other managers.
