What is the eNPS and how is it calculated?

eNPS stands for "Employee Net Promoter Score." The eNPS is a management tool used worldwide to measure engagement with a single question, namely:

  • How would you rate the organization as an employer to others?

Employees answer this question on a scale of 1 to 10:

  • If you give a 9 or 10, you are seen as a promotor / fan of the organization.
  • If you give a 7 or 8, you are seen as neutral / passive about the organization.
  • If you give a 6 or lower, you are seen as a detractor / critical about the organization.

You calculate the eNPS  by taking the percentage of promoters and subtracting the percentage of detractors. This results in a score between -100 and +100. If you have a positive eNPS, it means you have more promoters than detractors. If you have a negative eNPS, it means you have more detractors than promoters.

Examples of the eNPS calculation

Below are two examples based on the following image.

Example 1: eNPS: +33

% promoters = 50% (3 of 6)

% detractors = 17% (1 of 6)

eNPS = 50 - 17 = + 33

Example 2: eNPS: -33

% promoters = 17% (1 of 6)

% detractors = 50% (3 of 6)

eNPS = 17 - 50 = - 33
